MindNotes

Creative ASN, SEMH & Emotional Regulation Intervention
Using Music & Creative Arts-Informed Approaches

MindNotes is a structured creative intervention programme designed to support pupils experiencing barriers to learning linked to emotional wellbeing, behaviour, engagement, communication difficulties, sensory processing needs, anxiety, and additional support needs, including SEMH, SEND, ASN, physical disabilities, and complex needs.

The programme provides targeted 1:1 and small-group intervention for pupils who are not responding effectively to existing classroom, pastoral, therapeutic, or inclusion strategies and who require a more personalised, relational, sensory-informed, and consistent approach to support meaningful progress.

Using therapeutic-informed art and music therapy techniques, mentoring, movement, sensory-informed engagement, and creative expression as delivery methods for intervention, MindNotes enables pupils to access support in a way that feels safe, engaging, accessible, and relevant, particularly for those who may struggle to engage through more traditional approaches.

PURPOSE OF THE INTERVENTION

MindNotes is designed to support pupils who may present with a range of SEMH and additional support needs, including:

  • emotional dysregulation impacting behaviour and learning

  • anxiety, stress, or low confidence affecting participation

  • disengagement from education or reduced motivation

  • challenges linked to identity, peer influence, or social pressures

  • difficulty expressing thoughts, emotions, or experiences

  • breakdowns in trust with education, staff, or systems

The programme creates a structured and supportive environment where pupils can begin to re-engage with learning, rebuild confidence, and develop the skills needed to participate more positively in school life.

INTERVENTION APPROACH

MindNotes uses music not as an outcome but as a consistent and structured tool for engagement, communication, and behaviour change.

Through guided sessions, pupils are supported to:

  • develop emotional awareness and recognise triggers

  • build practical strategies for emotional regulation and self-management

  • understand the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviour

  • improve confidence, identity, and sense of self

  • express experiences and emotions in a safe and constructive way

  • build trust and positive relationships with adults

We use structured creative techniques and music therapy–informed strategies to support communication, emotional regulation, and sustained engagement over time.

This approach is particularly effective for pupils who may be reluctant to engage in more traditional intervention models.

SUPPORTING EMOTIONAL REGULATION, WELLBEING & BEHAVIOUR

Many pupils accessing MindNotes have experienced ongoing challenges within educational settings, including repeated behavioural escalation, withdrawal from learning, or difficulty maintaining positive relationships.

The programme provides a consistent, relational space where pupils can:

  • process emotions in a structured and supported way

  • develop coping strategies for stress, pressure, and change

  • improve self-regulation and reduce reactive behaviour

  • build resilience and emotional stability over time

  • re-establish trust in adults and educational environments

By addressing underlying emotional and behavioural needs, MindNotes supports pupils to make more positive choices and re-engage more effectively with school expectations.

UNDERSTANDING NEED & INFORMING SUPPORT

A key part of the MindNotes intervention model is developing a more profound understanding of each pupil’s individual needs, experiences, and barriers to engagement.

Through consistent interaction and observation, we are able to:

  • identify patterns in behaviour, engagement, and emotional response

  • understand underlying factors contributing to disengagement or disruption

  • adapt intervention approaches to meet individual needs

  • provide meaningful feedback to school staff to support wider provision

This ensures that intervention is responsive, targeted, and aligned with school-based support systems, including SEMH, ASN, inclusion, and wellbeing frameworks.

OUTCOMES FOR SCHOOLS

MindNotes supports schools in achieving key priorities linked to behaviour, inclusion, wellbeing, and engagement, including:

  • improved emotional regulation and self-management

  • reduced behavioural escalation and classroom disruption

  • increased engagement and participation in learning

  • improved confidence, communication, and self-expression

  • strengthened relationships between pupils and staff

  • improved attendance and connection to school

  • successful reintegration into mainstream classroom environments

The E.R.E.R. Method™\

Engage → Regulate → Express → Reframe

The E.R.E.R.
